Types of Catheters
Straight Tip Catheter
This single-use catheter is straight from end to end with eyelets or holes towards the end to simplify directing urine into the toilet. Straight tip catheters come in a variety of sizes and options to meet the needs of a variety of patients. For example, pocket catheters are available to discreetly carry and use anywhere while hydrophilic catheters refer to ones that come pre-lubricated.
Coudé Tip Catheter
If you cannot use a straight tip catheter or experience catheter pain with a straight tip catheter, your doctor may prescribe a coudé tip catheter for you to use instead. Coudé catheters are similar to straight catheters, only they have a curve on the end. The unique curve on the end of coudé catheters allows users to easily glide past tight spots, blockages, or enlarged prostates to empty the bladder.
Closed System Kits
A closed system catheter is another type that may be prescribed if you experience issues while using other catheter types. These issues include frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) or other types of bacterial infections. Closed system catheters are often referred to as no-touch catheters because they come in self-contained packaging, with a collection bag, and have been pre-lubricated.
